When I wrote my HHN 29 update post yesterday, I just had this nagging feeling that Universal would announce something the next day. Turns out that nagging feeling was right because this morning, Universal Studios announced the 4th house for HHN 29, an original house by the name of Depths of Fear.
In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that there was a rumor of a “‘Leviathan’ or Lovecraft themed house. Turns out, that rumor was mostly on point, at least as far as the “Leviathan” theme. Here’s the official marketing copy:
If you have a fear of water and what lies beneath, your skin will crawl with this new haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights. Depths of Fear mixes all the elements of the unknown with underwater elements, monstrous creatures and a countdown to a disastrous fate.Official Halloween Horror Nights site
An “underwater house” has been talked about ever since HHN 28 came to a close, with many people suggesting it would be a Jaws house. When the rumors began to tilt more towards a submerged horror in the depths of the ocean, the rumors began to shift toward either a Lovecraft theme or something similar to Bioshock-lite. However, the story seems to be completely original from those two things instead.
The workers of a deep-sea mining company have found themselves in a dire situation. They’ve delved too deep and encountered a parasitic race of creatures that turn out to be deadly. Panic ensues as you find yourself encountering infected miners and acidic creatures. The pressure builds as the self-destruct sequence counts down to the inevitable implosion of the facility.Official Halloween Horror Nights site
This copy points to what may be a disorienting experience as alarms sound throughout the house as the countdown inches closer to destruction. Also? This will absolutely be a house you won’t want to go in on a cool night because there’s zero chance you won’t get hit with acid aka water by either surprise water jets or the scare actors somehow spraying you themselves.
And they’ve given the monsters an interesting name:
As you venture further into the depths, you’ll encounter the creatures known onlyOfficial Halloween Horror Nights site
asthe “Mouthbrooders.” Picture being trapped in a claustrophobic mining installation underwater with a countless number of these slithering monsters. Your worst nightmares will come to life as these fiends spew flesh-eating acidic eggs at human hosts, and you witness miners being driven mad by the infection.
Last year, my favorite original houses were Slaughter Sinema and Scary Tales. I loved the theming and the stories. I’m admittedly not as excited about the two original houses announced so far as I was some of the original houses last year, but there’s still three to be announced, assuming they’re doing five IPs and five originals as they did last year.
Look for the next house announcement to be an IP house. Which house are you most looking forward to at HHN 29?
